It is not uncommon for couples to experience a rosy glow settling over their marriage for a few days during the time of year we celebrate as "Valentine's Day." People often buy the happily-ever-after fairy tale that a happy Valentine's Day is tantamount to a "happy marriage." The cozy dinner out. The shiny bracelet. The gushy card. Then, whoosh! It's gone. And, it's so easy to fall right back into the boring, take-us-for-granted rut for another year.

Faith should make a significant difference in marriage. A dynamic faith looks past our mistakes and sees the big picture of God’s will becoming our own will. If we desire what He desires, we need to focus on this dynamic faith, which is the unique image of God living inside us as we dwell in His presence.

The word “trial” describes situations that, by design, prove the quality of our character. God always tests us in the context of His character and for a specific purpose. The Bible teaches Christians to learn to face trials through the combination of belief and behavior. When we fail to see God’s hand in our circumstances, especially in our marriage, we can easily become candidates for spiritual and emotional depression.

Truths and myths are easily confused when we are experiencing the pressures of marital discord. Although we often try to avoid facing the truth about ourselves, bumps in the road to our marital happiness have a way of bringing us face-to-face with our faults. And the best way to ride easily over these bumps is to apply the practical principles that we can find in the Bible, which can set us free from our misguided assumptions or myths about marriage.
